Our story

"one cup, big impact"

Hi, I’m Maris! My sustainability journey started in 2018 when I realized how many single-use cups I was using while traveling for work. Switching to a simple foldable coffee cup sparked a bigger mission: reducing plastic waste and inspiring action.In 2023, I moved to Koh Samui, Thailand, and started turning collected ocean plastic into handcrafted souvenirs and decorations. Even clean-looking beaches were full of microplastics, so we needed a hands-on solution that not only cleans the environment but empowers local communities.
Collect.it by Maris was born. We began with beach cleanups, collecting ocean plastic, and transforming it into Souvenirs. Each piece tells a story turning waste into something valuable and inspiring.As the initiative grew, we partnered with local NGOs to set up improved recycling stations and expand awareness, while continuing to offer our creations to shops, resorts, and eco-conscious tourists. Together, we recycled thousands of pieces of ocean plastic, secured retail partnerships, and developed a model that can be replicated in other communities.Now back in Europe, we continue creating, sharing, and inspiring others to take small actions that truly make a difference.

Sant Elm Project 2026

“collect. Create. Inspire. Impact”

Sant Elm is our temporary home base for now.When we first arrived from Thailand to Mallorca, the beach looked almost untouched. Over time, I realised how much maintenance happens during the season to keep it that way. Outside of it, the reality shifts.While we’re here until the end of June, I’ve been cleaning the beach regularly, observing what collects along the shoreline, and experimenting with turning local plastic finds into small, handcrafted souvenirs.Most of what washes up has already been shaped by sun, salt, and sand, which makes it difficult to recycle through standard systems. Once it reaches the sea, options become even more limited unless small, local solutions exist.This isn’t about solving the problem. It’s about working with what’s here, staying curious, and exploring what’s possible on a small, local scale.Follow the journey via our socials.

What started as Collect.it by Maris has evolved into a local initiative focused on transforming ocean plastic waste into meaningful, handcrafted creations.Today, Collect.it Samui combines souvenirs & jewellery making, workshops, and educational programs in local communities and schools. Through this work, awareness is created in a hands-on and accessible way, connecting sustainability with creativity.
